FASTag 2022: Everything you need to know about FASTag

For those who hate waiting in your car at toll booths and wish to have a faster payment method, FASTag is here to your rescue. Introduced by the government of India, in recent years, FASTags have gained too much popularity owing to its convenience in usage. Moreover, it is mandatory to have FASTag to avoid paying penalties. So, if you have little idea of what FASTag is, read the article completely to get a complete understanding of the same. To begin with, the FASTag is a system for collecting tolls electronically in India, which is operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

1. How does FASTag work?

Toll payments are made directly from a prepaid or savings account by the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). As soon as you enter the toll plaza, the FASTag scanner scans the tag affixed to the vehicle and automatically debits the toll amount from your linked prepaid account or your bank account.

2. How to install FASTag?

FASTags are attached to the windscreen of a vehicle (from the inside) and allow drivers to pass through toll plazas without stopping. It means you just need to affix the tag and the scanner at the toll booth will do the rest of the work. You can purchase the tag from an official Tag issuer or participating Bank, and if the tag is linked to a prepaid account, recharging or topping up can be done as per your needs.

The other option is to purchase a FASTag at any highway toll plaza you come across or from the Indian Highway Management Company Ltd (IHMCL), which sells bank-neutral FASTags and gives users the choice of how to pay. No matter where you purchase from, you need to submit the following documents to get a FASTag:

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate
  • Passport size photo
  • Aadhaar Card and any other KYC document for Identification and Address proof

4. How to activate FASTag?

Once you have purchased your FASTag, you will need to self-activate it through the MY FASTag app and link your preferred mode of payment. Your FASTag will be automatically deducted from your bank account if you purchased it through a bank. Also, instead of linking the FASTag with your Bank A/c, you can also avail the service of a prepaid wallet facility by NHAI or the National Highway Authority of India. To use the aforesaid facility, you need to download My FASTag App from Play Store or App Store, link your prepaid wallet and pre-load the necessary amount.
