COVID-19 Vaccines Create 9 New Billionaires

With the advent of the Covid-19/Coronavirus, and the pandemic that ensued it has affected millions of people worldwide and a cure for it is much awaited. Although face masks and proper sanitary protocols have helped in stopping the large-scale spreading of the virus to some extent, a Vaccine was long awaited. While lakhs have died due to the virus, there are still a huge number of people who profited greatly even from the pandemic situation who are mainly the vaccine producers.

So here is a list of 9 people have become new billionaires since the beginning of Covid pandemic.

1. Stèphane Bancel

He is a billionaire French businessman who owns a 9% stake at Moderna, an American biotechnology company which is the producer of the Moderna “m-RNA-1273” vaccine against the Coronavirus.  He has master degrees in Engineering from two world renowned universities, namely the Paris-Saclay University in France and the University of Minnesota in the USA and also went for a MBA from the Harvard Business School. Bancel became the CEO of Moderna in 2011 and has amassed a fortune of $4.3billion .

2. Uğur Sahin

A German Oncologist and the CEO of BioNTech his main fields of research are cancer and immunology. Originally of Turkish descent Sahin moved to Germany when four years old and eventually got his medical degree from the University of Cologne followed by a doctorate in 1992. His company along with an American multinational pharmaceutical corporation, Pfizer Inc. developed one of the major vaccines used to fight the pandemic. The development of this vaccine added his wealth and as of now, he is worth an estimated $7.7 Billion.

3. Timothy A. Springer

He is a  PhD holder and a leading immunologist and professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Harvard. Springer owns shares in some smaller biotech firms such as Selecta Biosciences, Scholar Rock,etc. apart from being the founding investor and the owner of 3.5% of the biotech firm Moderna, that developed the “mRNA-1273” vaccine against the Coronavirus. Springer is worth an estimate of $2.5 Billion.

4. Noubar Afeyan

Afeyan is an entrepreneur, inventor and philanthropist of American-Armenian descent and is the co- founder of the leading Biotechnology firm, Moderna. He has a PhD in Biochemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) and also holds the right to over a 100 patented inventions. He owns over 2 million shares of Moderna and is now a new vaccine billionaire worth around $2.2billion.

5. Juan Lopez-Belmonte

He is the chairman of Laboratorios Farmaceuticos Rovi, a Biotechnology firm that is based out of Madrid. He has a degree in Business and Economics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In July Rovi and Moderna came together to collaborate on the manufacturing and packaging of Moderna’s Vaccine against Covid-19 resulting in an estimated net worth of around $2.4 billion of Lopez as of 2021.

6. Robert Samuel Langer, Jr.

He is an American chemical engineer, scientist, entrepreneur and inventor who is an alumni of Cornell University and MIT, holding over 1400 granted or pending patents. He is also the co-founder of Moderna along with several other similar companies. A 3% shareholder of Moderna, he has a reported net worth of $2 billion, making him another one of the new vaccine billionaires.

7. Zhu Tao

Tao is a founding member and the Chief Scientific officer and executive director of the Chinese biotechnology firm, CanSino Biologics Inc. The company’s portfolio of vaccines include ‘Ad5-EBOV’ to prevent Ebola and Ad5-nCov to fight the Covid-19 virus. He is a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh and has a doctorate in Chemical engineering from there. He continued his postdoctoral research in Carnegie Mellon University until October, 2004.  He lives in Tianjin, China and has a net worth of around $1.7 billion.

8. Qiu Dongxu

Dongxu is the senior Vice- President, executive director and co-founder of CanSino Biologics, which is an industry leader in vaccine development and manufacture accredited with having developed a vaccine for Ebola as well as Covid-19. He is the holder of a master degree in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario in Canada in 2000. He too lives in China and has a net worth of $1.6 billion.

9. Dr. Mao Huihua

She is the senior vice president, co-founder and deputy general manager of the Chinese biotechnology giant, CanSino Biologics and is primarily responsible for international regulatory affairs of the company. She has a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Nanchang University and also holds a master degree and a PhD from Chinese Academy of Sciences. She continued her post- doctoral research in the University of Waterloo till September 1990. She has a net worth of $1.5 billion making her one of the 9 new vaccine billionaires.
